PFC CSKA Sofia is a professional football club based in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia. The club was officially founded on 5 May 1948, though its roots date back to 1923. The club's abbreviation stands for Central Sports Club of the Army, however the club does not currently have any direct ties to the Bulgarian Army. CSKA is one of the most successful clubs in Bulgarian football, along with city rivals Levski Sofia, having won over 30 league titles, and has a strong record in European competition, having reached two European Cup semi-finals, four European Cup quarter-finals and one Cup Winners' Cup semi-final.
Chelsea's only European tie against CSKA Sofia came in the second round of the successful 1970-71 European Cup Winners' Cup campaign, with the Blues winning 1-0 home and away.
