FC Shakhtar Donetsk is a Ukrainian football club from the city of Donetsk, in the east of the country. One of the oldest clubs in Ukraine, Shakhtar Donetsk participated in early Soviet competitions and won the Soviet Cup in 1961 and 1962. Since the turn of the century they have been highly successful in Ukranian competition, winning seven league titles between 2002 and 2012 and six Ukrainian cups. In 2009 they became only the second Ukrainian club after Dynamo Kiev to win a European trophy by winning the last edition of the UEFA Cup.

Chelsea met Shakhtar Donetsk for the first time in the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League group stage.
