APOEL is a professional football team based in Nicosia, Cyprus. The name is an acronym, and stands for Athlitikos Podosfairikos Omilos Ellinon Lefkosias (Athletic Football Club of Greeks of Nicosia). They are one of the founding members of the Cyprus Football Association, and are the most successful football team in Cyprus with an overall tally of 20 championships, 19 cups and 11 super cups as of 2011. The club was formed as POEL on November 8, 1926, with the "Athletic" prefix added a year later.
APOEL first met Chelsea in the 2009-10 UEFA Champions League group stage, with Chelsea winning in Nicosia via a solitary Nicolas Anelka goal, before the Cypriot side earned a 2-2 draw in the final group game, after Chelsea had already qualified as group winners.
