Tromsø Idrettslag is a Norwegian professional football team founded in 1920, and based in Tromsø. They play their home games at Alfheim Stadium, and are the northernmost top-level football club in the world, positioned north of the Arctic Circle. Tromsø have never won the Norwegian championship, but have won the Norwegian Cup twice; in 1986 and 1996.
Chelsea's only matches against Tromsø came in the victorious 1997-98 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup campaign, and both legs were memorable affairs. The first leg took place in Arctic conditions in Tromsø, with the pitch covered in snow and the match being played during a blizzard (see gallery below). Chelsea struggled to cope with the conditions and lost 3-2. Chelsea took control in the second leg, eventually winning 7-1, with Gianluca Vialli scoring a hat-trick having scored both of Chelsea's goals in the first leg.
