Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli, commonly referred to as simply Napoli, is a professional Italian football club based in Naples. Founded in 1926, the club has spent most of its history in Serie A, and is the most successful and best supported club in Southern Italy. Napoli have won two Series A titles, both in the late 1980s when Diego Maradona played for the club, in addition to three Italian Cups, an Italian Super Cup, and the UEFA Cup in 1988-89. Though officially founded in 1926 as Associazione Calcio Napoli, the origin of the club can be traced back to the foundation of the Naples Foot-Ball & Cricket Club in 1904 by English sailor William Poths and his associate Hector M. Bayon.
Chelsea and Napoli met for the first time in the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League first knock out round. The Blues recovered from a 3-1 defeat in the first leg to prevail 5-4 on aggregate after a 4-1 extra time victory at Stamford Bridge, before going on to win the competition.
