FC Rubin Kazan is a Russian club based in the city of Kazan in the Republic of Tatarstan. They are one of the Easternmost clubs in UEFA competition. Founded in 1936 and re-established in 1958, the club first played in the Russian top flight in 2003. They won the Russian Premier League championship in 2008, and retained the title in 2009. They also won the 2011-12 Russian Cup. In recent years the club has become an increasingly formidable force in European competition, earning home draws in consecutive seasons against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League before knocking out holders Atletico Madrid in the 2012-13 UEFA Europa League. Chelsea and Rubin Kazan met for the first time in that competition, the Blues progressing 5-4 on aggregate despite losing the second leg in Russia, with the match staged at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium, rather than in Kazan. It was the first time Chelsea had failed to win a competitive match against a Russian side.
