Club Brugge Koninklijke Voetbalvereniging, often referred to in English as Club Bruges, is a professional football club based in Bruges, Belgium. The club was founded in 1891 and is one of the top clubs in Belgium, along with main rivals Anderlecht. Club Brugge has a long history in European competition, reaching two European finals and two European semi-finals. They are the only Belgian club to have played the final of the European Cup to date, losing to Liverpool in 1978.
Chelsea's meetings with Club Brugge consist of two Cup Winners' Cup ties, 24 years apart. On both occasions the Belgian side won the first leg at home, before losing the return leg at Stamford Bridge by a greater margin.
