Fussballclub St. Gallen 1879 is a Swiss football club based in the city of St. Gallen in the canton of the same name. Though considered to be the oldest club in Switzerland, the club is much less successful than their better known Swiss rivals, such as Grasshopper Club Zurich, BSC Young Boys, FC Zurich and FC Basel, and had won just one league title before winning the championship for the first time in 96 years in 1999-00.
The following season. Chelsea met St. Gallen in the first round of the 2000-01 UEFA Cup, and the Swiss side handed the Blues a shock defeat, recovering from a 1-0 deficit after the first leg to win 2-0 in the return, knocking Chelsea out of the competition and beginning a sorry three seasons in the UEFA Cup for the Londoners, with early exits following in 2001 and 2002.
