CSKA is a professional football club based in the Russian capital city of Moscow. The club name, PFC CSKA Moscow, stands for Professional Football Club — Central Sports Club of Army (Moscow). Officially, CSKA is not a section of the military CSKA sports club. But the Russian Ministry of Defence is one of the shareholders of PFC CSKA, while the central club claims them as their own. The club are one of the most successful clubs in Russian football, also having an extensive legacy in Soviet football, with multiple league and cup titles in both.
In 2004 the club received a major financial infusion from a sponsorship deal with Sibneft, an oil company owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. As owner of Chelsea, Abramovich did not take an ownership interest in the club, as UEFA rules allow only one club controlled by any one entity (person or corporation) to participate in European club competition in a given season. The partnership with Sibneft lasted until 2006, when VTB became the sponsor of the club.
Chelsea first met CSKA in the 2004-05 UEFA Champions League group stage, with the Blues winning both matches.
