FC Spartak Moscow are a professional football club based in Moscow, Russia. They have won multiple domestic league and cup competitions, and have reached the semi-finals of all three European club competitions. They won 12 Soviet championships (second only to Dynamo Kiev), and as of 2010 had won 9 of 18 Russian championships. The club were founded under the patronage of the trade union public organization (hence the nickname "The People's Team"), at a time when the patronage of new football clubs by public organisations was common (Dynamo Moscow - the police, CSKA - the army).

In 1935, club co-founder Nikolai Starostin proposed the name Spartak that was derived from Spartacus, a gladiator-slave who led a rebellion against Rome, inspired by an eponymous book by Raffaello Giovagnoli. Starostin is also credited with the creation of the Spartak logo.

Spartak were drawn against Chelsea in the 2010-11 UEFA Champions League group stage, when the clubs met for the first time in a competitive match, with Chelsea winning both matches comfortably.
