Beşiktaş Jimnastik Kulübü, known simply as Beşiktaş, is a Turkish sports club. The club's football team is one of the major teams in Turkey. The professional sports club, founded in 1903, is based in the Beşiktaş district in Istanbul. The football side's home, the Fiyapı İnönü Stadium, is located by the Bosphorus, near the Dolmabahçe Palace.
With football becoming the main sport of the Ottoman Empire around 1910, Beşiktaş members slowly started to give more attention to football, with Ahmet Şerafettin Bey starting the football team in August 1911. The team has since become one of the most successful in Turkey, winning multiple league and cup titles.
Chelsea met the Istanbul side in the 2003-04 UEFA Champions League group stage, when Beşiktaş stunned the Blues by winning 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, only the second home defeat in Chelsea's history in European competition. Chelsea would gain revenge by winning by the same scoreline in the reverse fixture to win the group, however the match was played at a neutral venue (the Arena AufSchalke in Germany), following a recent spate of terrorist attacks in Istanbul.
