Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli, commonly referred to as simply Napoli, is a professional Italian football club based in Naples. Founded in 1926, the club has spent most of its history in Serie A, and is the most successful and best-supported club in southern Italy. Napoli have won two Series A titles, both in the late 1980s when Diego Maradona played for the club, in addition to three Italian Cups, an Italian Super Cup, and the UEFA Cup in 1988-89. Though officially founded in 1926 as Associazione Calcio Napoli, the origin of the club can be traced back to the foundation of the Naples Foot-Ball & Cricket Club in 1904 by English sailor William Poths and his associate Hector M. Bayon.
Chelsea and Napoli met for the first time in the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League first knock out round. The Blues recovered from a 3-1 defeat in the first leg to prevail 5-4 on aggregate after a 4-1 extra time victory at Stamford Bridge, before going on to win the competition.
