Skonto FC is a Latvian football club, founded in 1991, based in the capital, Riga. Skonto won the Latvian Virsliga in the first 14 seasons of the club's existence.

Chelsea met Skonto in the 1999-00 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, winning comfortably 3-0 at Stamford Bridge, before playing out a 0-0 draw in Riga to qualify for the competition proper. This would be the first time that Chelsea had competed in Europe's premier club competition; they should have competed in the inaugural competition 44 years earlier, but didn't take part following pressure from the Football League, and in particular League secretary Alan Hardaker.
