Galatasaray Spor Kulübü is a Turkish football club, part of the Galatasaray multi-sport club based in Istanbul. Galatasaray was founded as a football club in the autumn of 1905 by students at the Galatasaray Lisesi high school. The school was originally founded in 1481, and took its name from the nearby medieval Genoese colony of Galata. In 1905, during the era of the Ottoman Empire, there were no laws for associations so the club could not be registered officially, but, after the 1912 Law of Association, the club registered legally. The club is one of the most successful in Turkish history, with multiple league and cup titles.
Chelsea first met Galatasaray in the 1999-00 UEFA Champions League 1st group stage, a 1-0 home win preceding a thumping 5-0 win in Istanbul.
