Valencia Club de Fútbol (València Club de Futbol in Valencian, also known as Valencia C.F. or simply Valencia) is a Spanish professional football club based in Valencia, on the eastern coast of Spain. They play in La Liga and are one of the most successful and biggest clubs in Spanish football. The club was established on 5 March 1919 and officially approved on 18 March 1919, and emerged as a major force in the 1940s. Valencia have won six La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey trophies, two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups, one UEFA Cup, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and two UEFA Super Cups. They also reached two UEFA Champions League finals in a row, losing to La Liga rivals Real Madrid in 2000 and then to German club Bayern Munich on penalties after a 1-1 draw in 2001.
Chelsea's first meeting with Valencia was in the 2006-07 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. With the tie finely poised following a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Stamford Bridge, the teams seemed to be heading for extra time with the score locked at 1-1 in the return before Michael Essien scored a last-minute winner to give the Blues a 2-1 victory and put them in the semi-finals. The clubs also met in the 2007-08 and 2011-12 group stages. In 2007 another 2-1 away victory in the second group game enhanced Chelsea's chances of progressing, before the sides drew 0-0 in the final group game, with Chelsea having already qualified in first place and consigning the Spanish side to last place in the group. In 2011 the sides again met in the final group game, this time with Chelsea needing a win or 0-0 draw to progress at the expense of the Spaniards. The Blues won 3-0 and qualified as group winners on their way to winning the competition for the first time.
