Wimbledon Football Club were founded in 1889 and spent most of their history in non-league football. They were elected to the Football League in 1977 and had reached the First Division by 1986. The club's greatest moment came in May 1988, when they defeated Liverpool in the FA Cup final to win their only major honour. Financial problems during the 1990s culminated in Wimbledon being taken over by a consortium who relocated the club to Milton Keynes in 2003, and renamed them MK Dons a year later. In response, disgruntled Wimbledon fans founded AFC Wimbledon, which they consider to be the legitimate successor to the original club.

Owing to their long stint in the amateur and semi-professional game, Wimbledon did not face Chelsea in a competitive match until 1986. The clubs would meet thirty times in total, with the most significant match being an FA Cup semi-final at Highbury in 1997, which Chelsea won 3-0.
